Quick Verdict

Worth it for women over 40? As an affordable variety app, it can be; as a menopause tool, no. Aaptiv offers a huge library of audio and video classes, and its meditation and yoga are a genuine strength for stress and sleep. But it has no menopause programming, pelvic-floor work or hormone content, its strength is audio-first without load tracking, and recent reliability complaints have followed its move to an AI-driven rebuild.

Aaptiv earns 6.1/10 on our hands-on evaluation. For this site’s audience the honest picture is that it is a good-value, mixed-modality app whose best fit for midlife women is low-impact cardio, yoga and meditation, not a menopause-specific programme. It is now owned by PEAR Health Labs and has added AI features (SmartCoach adaptive plans and an AI assistant), and much of its distribution is through employer and Medicare benefits, so many users pay little or nothing.

Start here: use the 7-day trial to explore the meditation and yoga libraries and check that Apple Watch and Health syncing works reliably on your device before committing.

What Aaptiv Actually Is

Aaptiv is an audio- and video-guided workout app with a large class library spanning treadmill and outdoor running, strength, cycling, elliptical, rowing, boxing, barre, yoga, stretching and guided meditation. Founded in 2016 as an audio-first app, it was acquired by PEAR Health Labs in 2021 and rebuilt around PEAR’s training-intelligence platform, adding SmartCoach adaptive plans in 2023 and an AI assistant in 2024. It now also sells heavily through employer benefits, health plans and Medicare, alongside the direct consumer subscription. The experience is a guided class you follow by ear or screen, not a trainer relationship or a load-tracked strength system.

Content and Features

At a glance: huge class variety with a genuine meditation and yoga library. But audio-first strength without load tracking, and no menopause-specific content.

Format Audio and video guided classes across many modalities; AI SmartCoach adaptive plans.
Strength Present, but historically audio-first with limited form demonstration and no logged loads.
Cardio and running A core strength: structured interval, tempo and endurance sessions.
Mind-body Strong. A long-standing meditation and yoga library.
Recovery Recovery runs and stretching, plus AI insights from heart-rate and sleep data.
Menopause / pelvic / hormone None.
Nutrition Editorial articles only; no integrated meal plans or tracking.
Reliability Recent complaints about Apple Watch and Health sync and removed workouts since the AI rebuild.

What Equipment You Need for Aaptiv

Very little for the mind-body and cardio content: a mat for yoga and stretching, and optionally a treadmill or bike for the machine-based classes. If you follow the strength classes, a light-to-medium dumbbell set is enough, though the app will not track your loads for you.

Why I suggest adjustable dumbbells here: building muscle over 40 means progressive overload, you have to keep adding weight as you get stronger. Rather than buying heavier pairs again and again, one adjustable set covers the whole range, so it’s the most practical option I’ve found for training at home.

A quick heads-up: some of the buy links above are Amazon affiliate links, so if you grab something through them I may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. I only ever point you to kit I’d happily use myself.

Bottom line on equipment: a mat is enough for the standout mind-body content; add light dumbbells or a machine for the cardio and strength classes.

How We Scored Aaptiv: the 6.1 / 10 Breakdown

Is Aaptiv Good for Women Over 40?

Aaptiv can be a useful, affordable variety app for a woman over 40, especially for low-impact yoga, walking or treadmill sessions and its genuinely good meditation library, which supports stress and sleep. But it has no menopause specialization: no menopause programming, no pelvic-floor work, no hormone or cycle awareness and no women’s-health clinicians. Its strength content is audio-first and not built around progressive overload, so it is weaker on the muscle and bone work that matters most after 40. Its honest value here is as a general mixed-modality app, not a menopause tool.

What I found using it. Aaptiv is an audio-first app, but it does show a short video of each move, which I appreciated: I am very visual and I lose my form, so being shown and reminded genuinely helps. Where it shines for me is anywhere you cannot stare at a screen, at the gym or on a guided outdoor workout, and that is where I used it most; you can also connect Strava if you run. The navigation is intuitive, with workouts split by category and challenges plus your own personal plan, so I found what I needed quickly. There are a lot of workouts, and an AI SmartCoach that assembles a plan for you: mine was a SmartCoach strength program that rotated upper body, lower body and full body on the days I chose. Just listening rather than watching is an adjustment, so at home it would not be my first choice, but I will keep testing it for outdoor sessions.

Who it suits, and what I missed. I did not find any dedicated perimenopause or menopause programming or education. There is still plenty on offer: calming content from meditation to deeper-sleep and relaxing stretch sessions, yoga and Pilates-style classes, and a lot of strength work. There is also a lot of nutrition information, though again it is general rather than aimed at a peri or meno audience; some of it is still useful, like tips for cholesterol, but I missed a proper filter, for example I wanted low-carb meals and could not easily find them. Most workouts land around 30 minutes, which is what busy people need. So for a peri or meno audience I do not think this is the best fit, because other apps address the specific hormonal needs, pelvic floor or joint issues more directly. But if you know what you are doing and do not need that specific guidance, there is a lot here and it is worth it.

What others found too. Independent reviews agree on the shape of it: Aaptiv is at its best for audio-guided runs and gym sessions where watching a screen is impractical, while visual learners note they miss on-screen demonstrations, and some flag the quirk of a demo video with a different trainer talking over it. The Strava link is an official, supported feature.

How It Fits Perimenopause, Menopause & Beyond

Our capability breakdown of how well this program suits women across perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause. Women Over 40 is our most important criterion for this site, and this is the full breakdown behind the Women Over 40 row in the scoring table above.

This is the perimenopause and menopause assessment, and it is separate from the overall score. Twelve things a programme either does for a midlife body or does not, each scored out of 10 with my reasoning next to it. Together they produce a single menopause fit score, and that becomes one of the nine categories in the overall scoring below.

What the sources say: Company/AI/pricing facts verified from Aaptiv's own site and PEAR Health Labs releases; features and sentiment cross-checked with ConsumerAffairs, GymBird, the App Store and Google Play. Menopause capability scored as a verified absence (no official or independent source surfaced any such content). Star counts are approximate as reported by stores/aggregators; none fabricated. Reliability sentiment has softened since the AI rebuild even as headline ratings stay high. NOTE: Katy has personally used the app; a hands-on upgrade is planned.

These are evidence-informed suitability ratings, not clinical measurements. They combine exercise science with product-specific research and, where indicated, hands-on testing, alongside multi-source verification, and are approximate. Individual response varies. A starting point, not medical advice. How we score menopause fit

What the Research Says: Aaptiv’s Claims Checked

The mind-body and cardio content is aligned with real benefits for midlife women. Regular exercise, including yoga and relaxation-based practice, is associated with better sleep, mood and quality of life around menopause,[1][3] and Aaptiv’s established meditation and yoga library speaks directly to that. So the parts of Aaptiv most useful to this audience are genuinely worthwhile.

What the science does not support is treating audio cardio and light strength as a full midlife strategy. The strongest evidence for protecting midlife muscle and bone points to progressive resistance training with sufficient load and tracking,[2][4] which an audio-first, non-logged format does not provide. And there is no menopause-specific programming or symptom support. So Aaptiv is best used for its cardio and mind-body strengths, paired with separate progressive strength work.

What Users Report: Verified Sentiment

Rating snapshot: the iOS app carries a high legacy rating, about 4.7 stars from tens of thousands of ratings, while Google Play is weaker at about 3.7. The important nuance is a recent surge of complaints, tied to the AI-driven rebuild, about the app becoming buggy, with broken Apple Watch and Apple Health sync, lost tracking and removed workouts. So the headline rating stays high while recent experience appears to have softened.

Consistently praised

  • Motivating trainers and a huge variety of classes.
  • Genuinely good meditation and yoga content.
  • Audio format makes cardio less monotonous; good value.

Consistently criticised

  • Recent bugs: Apple Watch and Health sync breaking, lost tracking.
  • Popular workouts removed in the rebuild; unresponsive support.
  • Audio-first strength lacks form demonstration and load tracking.

Source and credibility note. Aaptiv’s trainers are certified and its parent, PEAR Health Labs, has a health-tech posture (Medicare, musculoskeletal programs, biometric insights) and an AI partnership, but there are no menopause clinicians or women’s-health specialists. The menopause read is a verified absence. Star counts are approximate as reported by the stores and aggregators. Sources: official site, App Store, Google Play, PEAR releases, independent reviews.

If Aaptiv Is Not Right for You: Best Alternatives

Aaptiv is broad and great for audio-led gym and outdoor sessions, but it has no perimenopause or menopause programming and is audio-first. If that is your sticking point, here is where our other reviews point:

  • Best if you want to see the moves (visual learners): Caroline Girvan is free and fully video-led, with clear follow-along form, the opposite of audio-only.
  • Best for menopause-specific design: Pvolve keeps things low impact and joint friendly while adding clinically informed programming for perimenopause and menopause.
  • Best gentle, joint-friendly strength: The Sculpt Society stays low impact and beginner friendly with clear cueing.
  • Best free library you can actually filter: FitOn has a big on-demand library you can sort by type and length, which answers the filtering Aaptiv lacks.

Aaptiv FAQ

Is Aaptiv good for women over 40?

It can be a useful, affordable variety app, especially for low-impact cardio, yoga and its strong meditation library. But it has no menopause, pelvic-floor or hormone content, and its strength is audio-first without load tracking, so it is a general app rather than a menopause programme.

Is Aaptiv good for menopause?

It has no menopause-specific content. Its meditation and yoga can genuinely help with stress and sleep during menopause, but for dedicated menopause programming, pelvic-floor work or progressive strength, Pvolve or Menovation go much further.

How much does Aaptiv cost in 2026?

$14.99 per month or $99.99 per year (about $8 per month), with a 7-day free trial. Many users get it subsidized or free through an employer, health plan or Medicare benefit.

Has Aaptiv become buggy?

Since its move to an AI-driven rebuild, there has been a rise in reliability complaints, including broken Apple Watch and Apple Health syncing, lost tracking and removed workouts. Check that syncing works on your device during the free trial.

Is Aaptiv worth it in 2026?

For a woman over 40 who wants affordable audio variety and strong meditation and yoga, and who pairs it with separate strength work, it can be good value, especially if subsidized. It is not worth it as a menopause solution. This is a hands-on look (sample tested); a fuller multi-week test is being added.

Is Aaptiv still around in 2026?

Yes. Aaptiv is still operating in 2026 under PEAR Health Labs, which acquired it in 2021 and rebuilt it around an AI-driven platform. The trade-off is that the rebuild brought a wave of reliability complaints, including broken Apple Watch and Apple Health syncing and removed workouts, so the app is active but noticeably changed from its audio-first origins.

Can you get Aaptiv free through insurance or Medicare?

Often, yes. Alongside the direct $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year plans, Aaptiv is distributed through employer benefits, health plans and Medicare Advantage, so many people pay a reduced rate or nothing at all. Check with your HR department or health plan before subscribing directly, as you may already have access.

How do I cancel Aaptiv?

If you subscribed directly, you cancel through your app-store subscription settings, and the annual plan carries a 30-day money-back window. If you got Aaptiv through an employer, health plan or Medicare benefit, you manage or cancel it through that provider rather than the app store.

Final Verdict

Our Score: 6.1 / 10 · hands-on look; long-term score provisional

Aaptiv is a good-value, mixed-modality app with a genuinely strong meditation and yoga library, which is its best fit for midlife women alongside low-impact cardio. Its honest limits are that it has no menopause programming, pelvic-floor work or hormone content, its strength is audio-first without load tracking, and recent reliability complaints have followed its AI rebuild.

Aaptiv is for women over 40 who want affordable audio variety and strong mind-body content and will pair it with separate strength work. Aaptiv is not for women who want menopause programming, pelvic-floor work or heavy progressive strength, in which case Pvolve or Menovation is the better fit.
